This site, presently under construction, will be dedicated to furthering the democratic process in the Town of Clinton by encouraging an informed electorate to engage in an ongoing democratic dialog with our town’s Board of Selectmen. Such a dialog relies on an appreciation of the democratic process, namely, that elected representatives serve at the will of the people and that the people should continue to engage in the process by making their will clearly known to those in office. An election is only the beginning of the democratic process. What happens thereafter should demonstrate democracy in action on a day-to-day basis.
This site will be designed to aid the democracy-in-action process in two ways: One, it will publish votes on town issues so citizens can fully understand the positions of their elected representatives on important matters that affect the quality of life in the Town of Clinton and the well-being of Clinton citizens, including today’s citizens and those who will come after us. Two, elected representatives can be confident that their votes on matters are accurately conveyed to the electorate because the facts will come from public record documents. This fact-based posting will result in Selectmen’s positions on issues being less vulnerable to misrepresentation, rumor, and hearsay.
To this end, this site will publish information from the public records such as:
- Votes of Selectmen on key town issues
- Documents relating to current town affairs
- Town meeting votes on articles that substantially affect the quality of life in Clinton now and in the future
- Progress votes on articles previously voted on by the electorate
The site will also provide links to information sources that will give Clinton residents easy access to the facts they need to inform their democratic choices.
We view this site as a supplement to, not a competitor of, other information sources. Our town is fortunate to have informative local web sites, discussion forums, two in-town newspapers, and news coverage by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette.
Our goal is to provide public-record facts (not opinion) that we can all use when we need to dig deeper into the news, or to prepare ourselves for elections, town meetings, and other civic events.
